Antimicrobial Stewardship and Management of Sepsis: Two Sides of the Same Coin
Antimicrobial Stewardship (ASP) refers to the efforts aimed at enhancing judicious prescribing of unique therapeutic agents in the health care setting. Sepsis is a life threatening, complex clinical dilemma with regard to antimicrobial stewardship. Recent literature questioning the clinical impact of time to antimicrobials in sepsis highlights the relationship of sepsis and ASP. In the era of increasing antimicrobial resistance, there is a need for greater alignment between sepsis and ASP. This presentation will describe the role of antimicrobial stewardship in management of sepsis and areas of opportunity to potentiate this interdependent relationship between them.
Nurses, physicians, pharmacists, emergency responders, healthcare management teams, and other healthcare staff may benefit.
At the end of the webinar, the attendee should be able to:
- Explain the framework of an antimicrobial stewardship program and the interdependent relationship with sepsis management;
- Underline different strategies to optimize antimicrobial therapy in patients with sepsis;
- Recognize the multi-disciplinary ASP efforts to improve patient care in a hospitalized patient with sepsis and challenges ahead.
