Saving Lives Through a Statewide Sepsis Initiative
Collaboration among stakeholders in a statewide sepsis initiative can lead to marked decreases in sepsis mortality. Through a focused approach aimed at early recognition and early, appropriate intervention, lives can be positively impacted.
Executive Leadership Engagement in PFACS to Ensure Safe, High-Quality Sepsis Care
During this session, Dr. David Mayer, Executive Director for Medstar Institute for Quality and Safety, and Armando Nahum, President and Co-Founder of the Safe Care Campaign, will discuss national trends and the potential for leadership engagement in patient and family advisory councils (PFACS) focused on partnerships to improve safety and quality. The presenters will also provide examples of patient and family advisory council contributions and achievements for ensuring high-quality sepsis care.

James “Jim” Guliano, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, FACHE
Vice President, Operations and Chief Clinical Officer, Ohio Hospital Association
James “Jim” Guliano leads both the development and implementation of clinical initiatives as well as the operational functions of the Ohio Hospital Association (OHA). Jim possesses healthcare leadership expertise, having served as former OHA Vice President of quality, Vice President for patient care services, and Chief Nursing Officer, as well as currently serving as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Jim serves on the Advisory Board of Sepsis Alliance. He currently leads the Ohio Hospital Association’s Statewide Sepsis Initiative in which 125 Ohio hospitals participate in efforts aimed at decreasing statewide sepsis mortality.
David Mayer, MD
Executive Director, Medstar Institute for Quality and Safety, MedStar Health
David Mayer, MD, is Executive Director of the MedStar Institute for Quality & Safety (MIQS). In this role, Dr. Mayer leads specific quality and safety programs in support of discovery, learning, and application of innovative methods to operational clinical challenges. Dr. Mayer recently served as Chief Executive Officer for the Patient Safety Movement Foundation (PSMF), where he led global Patient Safety efforts and initiatives in 64 countries and over 4,800 hospitals. He also serves on the Clinical Advisory Board for The Leapfrog Group and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Clinical Learning Environment Review program.
Prior to his appointment as Executive Director at MIQS, Dr. Mayer served for over six years as Vice President, Quality and Safety for MedStar Health, overseeing the infrastructure for clinical quality and its operational efficiency for MedStar and each of its entities.
Dr. Mayer founded and has led the Annual Telluride International Patient Safety Roundtable and the Academy for Emerging Leaders in Patient Safety Summer Camp for the last thirteen years. Additionally, he co-produced the patient safety educational film series titled “The Faces of Medical Error…From Tears to Transparency,” which won numerous awards including the prestigious Aegis Film Society Top Short Documentary Award.
Most recently, Dr. Mayer was recognized and elected as a member of the International Society for Quality in Health Care’s (ISQua) prestigious International Academy of Quality and Safety in Health Care (IAQS). He was listed on the Becker’s Hospital Review 2017 and 2018 lists of Top 50 people leading patient safety. He was also presented with the 2017 Humanitarian Award from the PSMF for his lifesaving achievements in patient safety. Other honors include being selected by the ISQua as an International Quality and Safety Expert, receiving the 2013 Founders’ Award from the American College of Medical Quality, receiving the Humanism in Medicine Award for his commitment to teaching, service, and patient advocacy from the University of Illinois/American Association of Medical Colleges, and receiving the 2010 Sprague Patient Safety Award from the Institute of Medicine in Chicago.
Armando Nahum
Director, Center for Engaging Patients as Partners, MedStar Institute for Quality and Safety
Armando Nahum is the Co-Founder and President of Safe Care Campaign, an organization dedicated to infection prevention, and a principal of the Healthcare and Patient Partnership Institute (H2Pi) , a premiere organization helping hospitals develop patient and family councils for quality and safety (PDACQS®). Armando currently sits on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Council on Infection Prevention, the Georgia Hospital Association Advisory Board to Prevent Infection, and the Georgia Department of Public Health Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI) Advisory Committee. He is a member of the MedStar Health System Patient and Family Advisory Council for Quality and Safety (SPFACQS) and a voting member of the Presidential Advisory Council for Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria (PACCARB). Armando is the Patient and Family Advisor for MedStar Health Sepsis System Initiative and the Director of the Center for Engaging Patients as Partners at MedStar Institute for Quality and Safety (MIQS). Through his work throughout the state of Maryland, he has been instrumental in passing legislation and produced a sepsis video for patient and family education, which won the Sherman Award and was included in the Circle of Honor for Patient Safety Innovation from the Maryland Patient Safety Center.also a founding member of Patients for Patient Safety US (PFPS US) within the World Health Organization (WHO).
